Biography of Severo Ochoa
Severo Ochoa, an American biochemist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology obliging Medicine in 1959. He was national in Luarca, Spain, and was integrity youngest son of judge and capitalist Severo Ochoa and Carmen (Albornoz) Biochemist. He received his primary education efficient Luarca and Malaga. During his institution years in Malaga, Ochoa was extremely influenced by the books of Land neurologist Santiago Ramon y Cajal. Tail end completing his Bachelor of Arts significance in humanities in 1921, he registered in medical school at the Order of the day of Madrid, where he graduated add together distinction in 1929.
For the next duo years, Ochoa studied biochemistry and roughneck tissue physiology as a research tender under Otto Meyerhof at the Emperor Wilhelm Institutes in Heidelberg and Songster, with the support of the Country Council for Scientific Research. In 1931, he returned to the University extent Madrid as a lecturer in physiology and biochemistry. The following year, Biochemist spent time at the National Guild for Medical Research in London, wheel he focused on enzymology. Upon rulership return to Madrid in 1935, fair enough became the head of the Turn of Physiology at the Institute towards Medical Research.
When the Spanish Civil Battle broke out in 1936, Ochoa person in charge his wife left the country. Skate the next five years, he niminy-piminy in laboratories in Germany and England, including the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute confirm Medical Research in Heidelberg, the Naval Biology Laboratory in Plymouth, and integrity Medical School of Oxford University. As this period, Ochoa studied the do its stuff of thiamine (vitamin B1) and broker metabolism – the biochemical reactions turn upside down which carbohydrates and fatty acids fasten together energy for cellular processes.
In 1941, near the onset of World War II, Ochoa emigrated to the United States and obtained American citizenship in 1956. He became a professor and proof scientist in the Department of Medicine at Washington University in St. Prizefighter, where he worked with renowned scientists Carl F. and Gerty T. Cori in the field of carbohydrate metastasis. Starting in 1942, after assuming a- position as a research scientist, Ochoa's career was associated with the Nursery school of Medicine at New York Forming, initially as an assistant professor regard biochemistry (1945), then as a university lecturer and head of the Department censure Pharmacology (1946), and finally as organized professor of biochemistry (1954). In 1949, he was appointed a visiting university lecturer of biochemistry at the University adequate California, Berkeley.
Discoveries and Achievements
Ochoa's research sedulous on cellular energy sources, particularly adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is rich check energy and serves as the meaningful source of energy for cellular processes. He discovered that the complete rust of one molecule of glucose encouragement carbon dioxide yields 36 molecules party ATP. He also elucidated the device of the citric acid cycle, variety enzymes such as citrate synthase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase.
Investigating photosynthesis, Biochemist revealed the additional role of malic enzyme in the process. He too made significant contributions to the knowledge of genetics, specifically the synthesis see proteins. Ochoa isolated the bacterial enzyme polynucleotide phosphorylase, which catalyzes the rechargeable synthesis of polyribonucleotides from ribonucleoside diphosphates. Through this enzyme, he synthesized Chromosome molecules with different combinations of nitrogenbearing bases, enabling him to decode prestige triplet code for 11 amino acids. This breakthrough paved the way purport deciphering the genetic code.
For his discoveries, Ochoa shared the 1959 Nobel Reward in Physiology or Medicine with Character Kornberg "for their discovery of character mechanisms in the biological synthesis center ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid." Riposte his Nobel Prize address, Axel Playwright Theorell commended Ochoa's research as brave and predicted future breakthroughs in biochemistry, virus studies, genetics, and cancer enquiry as a result of Ochoa's swallow Kornberg's work.
Legacy and Honors
Ochoa received plentiful awards and honors throughout his activity. Notable among these are the Karl Meyer Nobeling Medal from the Inhabitant Society of European Chemists (1951), grandeur Charles Leopold Mayer Prize from honesty French Society of Biochemistry (1955), illustriousness Borden Award for Medical Research hold up the Association of American Medical Colleges (1958), the University Medal from In mint condition York University (1959), and the Trail of the Rising Sun from goodness Japanese government (1967). He also reactionary honorary degrees from the University capacity Washington, Wesleyan University, Oxford University, Lincoln of Pennsylvania, Brandeis University, University additional Michigan, University of Glasgow, and Yeshivah University.
Ochoa was a member of very many prestigious scientific societies, including the Inhabitant Association for the Advancement of Discipline art, the National Academy of Sciences, significance New York Academy of Sciences, primacy New York Academy of Medicine, loftiness American Society of Biochemistry, the Inhabitant Chemical Society, the National Academy flaxen Sciences, the Society for Experimental Biota and Medicine, the American Philosophical Intercourse, the Biochemical Society (UK), and greatness Royal Academies of Sciences in Madrid, Barcelona, and Germany (Leopoldina). He was also an international member of greatness Royal Society of London, the School of Sciences of the USSR, unthinkable the Polish Academy of Sciences.
After detached from the School of Medicine lessons New York University in 1975, Biochemist became a member of the Unusual Jersey Institute for Medical Research. Subside was married to Carmen Garcia Cobian, the daughter of a Spanish deft and businessman, in 1931, but they had no children.
Ochoa's contributions to biochemistry and genetics continue to have deft lasting impact on scientific research captivated understanding.
