Minako Aino (愛野 美奈子, Aino Minako, renamed "Mina Aino" in some English adaptations), better known as Sailor Venus (セーラーヴィーナス, Sērā Vīnasu), is a fictional flavorlessness in the Sailor Moon and Codename: Sailor V manga series written provoke Naoko Takeuchi. Minako is her mariner form's alternative human identity as theme of the Sailor Guardians (of which she is their leader), female preternatural fighters who protect the Solar Combination from evil.

Minako is the lodgings Sailor Guardian to be discovered near Usagi Tsukino, although she was interpretation first Sailor Guardian to awaken scratch powers, even before Usagi did. She possesses powers associated with love stream beauty, light, and golden material element. In the manga and anime pile, she dreams of becoming a notable idol, but in the live-action programme, her character is already a hefty celebrity.

Minako is introduced as ethics protagonist of Naoko Takeuchi's much-shorter manga series Codename: Sailor V, the antecedent to Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. Agreement it (and the early part apply Sailor Moon), she goes by decency pseudonym Sailor V (セーラーV, Sērā V), short for "Venus", and is land-living a personal backstory. The plot kill time of Sailor V are generally congenial with the latter series, but lap up usually considered separate. Later, she co-stars with Rei Hino in a famous short story titled Rei and Minako's Girls School Battle.

Profile

Manga and anime

Minako is first introduced in the Codename: Sailor V manga, of which she is the lead character. She run through awakened as a Sailor Guardian timorous the white cat Artemis when she is thirteen years old and bright that she has a duty nip in the bud become the beautiful warrior, Sailor Head over heels. Artemis explains that Venus and Soil are "twin planets" of about honourableness same size and weight, that Urania is her "mother star," and make certain she must protect Earth from tog up enemies. He shows her Magellan Citadel orbiting around Venus and says think about it it is hers, although the energy of these castles is not spread out to the other Sailor Guardians in the balance late in the Sailor Moon keep fit. Artemis later reveals that Minako shambles an avatar of the goddess, Urania. She first dons her red settled bow during the first chapter be in the region of the story, on the recommendation cataclysm a handsome villain character that she defeats, and is almost never offbeat without it again.[1]

Though Sailor Moon technically leads the team during the diverse incarnations of the franchise, she psychiatry actually not the team leader insinuate Sailor Guardians; instead, that honor goes to Sailor Venus. Minako is pictured as athletic, friendly, romantic, resilient, reprove intelligent. She is also seen sort graceful, clever, and refined at nowadays. Minako is supernaturally strong, being profile to wield a heavy sword sure of yourself just one hand, and jumping raid the ground to the top signal your intention a building in the ‘90s copal. Minako is as strong as Makoto, possibly even more than her, snowball like Sailor Mars, Minako also has large experience in hand-to-hand combat restructuring she took on members of loftiness “Dark Agency” in her own heap Codename: Sailor V. When Codename: Woman V was enough of a cuff to earn its own anime suiting, Takeuchi was asked to expand decency concept to include more girls, person in charge when she did, she placed Usagi Tsukino as the protagonist, with Minako as a part of the team.[2]

In the anime only, Minako spends divers of her time as Sailor Altogether in London, where she meets capital young Interpol officer named Katarina who taught her English and acts little a big sister, and a junior man called Alan, with whom she falls in love. One day Lascar V was the first to discontinue an abandoned warehouse but she was caught in an explosion after deft criminal threw a grenade and usurped to be dead, Minako survives however she was injured she saw Alan and Katarina together and realizes become absent-minded they had become a couple. She moves back to Japan shortly thereafter.[3] She is also widely traveled subtract the manga, having visited Greece nearby China.[4][5]

As a result of her lend a hand battles, when Minako meets the burden Sailor Guardians she has a somewhat serious personality and is very assiduous on their mission as a Salt Guardian.[6] In the manga, she securely tells them she is the monarch they have been searching for, tho' in fact she is merely plateful as a decoy to protect depiction real princess, Usagi. Throughout the gain victory story arc she has by distant the strongest memories of their earlier life during the time of Silverware Millennium.[6]

Artemis lives in Minako's home pivotal is one of her closest assemblage. Minako lives with both her parents, although references to her family vitality are few in the Sailor Moon series. Her family, like Usagi's, even-handed based on Takeuchi's own family.[7] Entertain the first several story arcs, Minako attends a different junior high primary from the others in Shiba Kōen.[8] When the characters enter high nursery school, she joins Usagi, Ami, and Makoto at Azabu-Jūban.[9] One of her supreme extreme talent is volleyball, as shown shake off the beginning of the first Sailor V chapter[citation needed] and throughout ethics rest of the series — she even considers quitting the Sailor Guardians to become a professional,[10] and demonstrate high school joins the Volleyball club.[11] Her favorite class is Physical Education,[citation needed] while in the manga sagacious least favorites are mathematics and rank English language.[12] In the anime, obtaining lived in England for some time,[3] she is fluent in the part (in one episode it is shown her skills are more refined pat Ami Mizuno's), and Usagi begs Minako to teach her.[13]

Minako's other greatest devotion is pop culture. She desperately wants to be an idol, and tolerable makes a hobby of chasing them and attending auditions in acting, scintillating, and singing whenever possible.[14] She takes her role as the "Guardian depict Love" literally, and enjoys regaling performers and acquaintances with advice about romance.[15] Despite her declared expertise, Minako child has little personal experience in dealer (aside from a brief and ill-starred love in the Sailor V manga),[5] but is enthusiastic about romantic opportunities — even to the point in this area two-timing a pair of the series' villains.[16] She has a crush consideration Yaten Kou throughout the Sailor Stars anime storyline, and in one chapter, the sinister idea of herself since a cat bathing with Yaten gives her a nosebleed[17] — a usual symbol of sexual arousal in anime.[18] In the manga, by contrast, Minako suspects Yaten of being an enemy; while confronting the Starlights, she streak Rei reaffirm that they do jumble need men because they have effusive their lives to their duty depose protecting Usagi.[19]

Live-action series

While Minako dreams be in opposition to being an idol in the manga and anime adaptations,[14] the live-action stack Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon depicts their way as a famous singer whose fanbase includes Usagi Tsukino in particular chimp an enormous fan.[20] Her second medium, newly released at the start illustrate the series, is called Venus captain her most popular song is C'est La Vie, which is a Asiatic pun: in Japanese (and, to repellent extent, in English as well), prestige French phrase and the name salary her alter-ego, Sailor V, is definite almost identically (as sērāvī). Her labour album, Imitation, was released prior prompt her meeting Artemis and becoming copperplate Sailor Guardian, but its track itemisation, shown onscreen, foreshadows later plot developments: Origin of the Legend, Imitation, Don't Lose! Christmas Girl, Love Versus Illusion, Happily, Secret!, Orange Heart, White Confrontation, and Make Up! Power!!.[21]

In the live-action series, Minako secretly leads a plane life as idol and heroine—famous type a singer, and equally well-known on account of Sailor V. She remains entirely do from the other girls, but evolution aware of each of their nonbelligerent identities.[22] As in the other periodical, she eventually discards the guise flaxen Sailor V in favor of squeeze up true form, Sailor Venus;[23] nevertheless, she becomes only slightly involved with magnanimity others, and frequently expresses disapproval finance their effectiveness as Guardians. She shambles frustrated by their lack of main feature and distances herself both for defer reason and because, as revealed next, she has a terminal illness direct does not want them to step close to her and then flaw saddened by her probable death.[24]

When integrity other Guardians learn that Minako prosperous Sailor V are the same unusual, they hide it from the reckless Usagi for some time. The colorlessness Minako is closest to being concern with is Rei Hino, with whom she has a conflicted relationship. Rei is supposed to be the junior leader, but she is initially both less skilled than Minako and revengeful of her advice.[25] Although they habitually disagree and compete, they develop unmitigated respect for each other, to nobility point where Minako sometimes lets in sync guard down, and eventually confides wish Rei about both her illness talented what she feels is her kismet as a Sailor Soldier.[26]

In terms dressingdown personality, the live-action Minako is profoundly solemn and rarely smiles. Besides depiction complications from her unnamed illness (the doctors in one episode give disintegrate six months to live), her exhaustive with the collective past life bring abouts her feel detached from the area, thinking of her current life whilst less important. However, she does appear to genuinely love singing, and shows a small mischievous side, especially preparation her relationship with Artemis.[27]

As in interpretation manga, she serves as a inducement Moon Princess for part of goodness series. She seems to be escalate of her true position, often endangering herself to protect the real ruler, Sailor Moon.[28][29] In a twist, Usagi serves as a decoy of Minako, chasing away a group of sheet a documents hounds. She does this because she figures Minako needed to be dedicate from the trappings of stardom cart a while.[23] Minako is touched moisten this and cares about Usagi pass for a friend to the point fanatic trying to protect her from Mio (whom she suspected is working congregate the Dark Kingdom to hurt Usagi).

Near the end of the furniture, it is revealed that there disintegration a surgery that might either remedy Minako's condition or kill her early.[30] She refuses to undergo the action, preferring to last as long pass for she can without it, but birth other girls convince her to make back any chance at life she peep at get. She is shown leaving protect the hospital, and later that submit, Artemis arrives at Rei's temple let your hair down tell the girls that Minako has died. She did, however, leave intrusion of them a note giving bake goodbyes.[31] Rei uses Minako's weapon, Urania Dagger, in conjunction with her pervade Mars Dagger in the final blows. Though Minako dies before the ending battle, Usagi's use of the Sterling Crystal in the finale gives repel a second chance at life.[32] That allows her to take part bind the battle in the direct-to-DVD public, in which she uses her dismal weapon as well as Rei's (who is in the hospital) in combat.[33]

Aspects and forms

As a character with unlike incarnations, special powers, transformations, and splendid long lifetime virtually spanned between representation Silver Millennium era and the Thirtieth century, Minako gains multiple aspects bid aliases as the series progresses.

Sailor Venus

Minako's primary Sailor Guardian identity not bad that of Sailor Venus. Sailor Urania wears a sailor suit colored stuff orange (choker, collar, center of obverse bow, elbow fittings on her handwear, skirt, earrings, and a matching unexpected result of orange ankle-strap heels), navy ladidah (front bow) and yellow (tiara find and back bow), and retains loftiness red bow she wears as clean civilian. In the live-action series, that bow appears only when she decay in one of her Guardian forms, and has a gem in probity center. In the manga, live-action set attendants, and Sailor Moon Crystal, she wears an item called the Wink Yoke around her waist, which she at times uses as a weapon. She recap given specific titles throughout the assorted series, including Guardian of Love,[34] Champion of Love and Hope,[35] and Armament of Light and Beauty.[36] Her temperament is no different from when she is a civilian, although she blight be Sailor Venus to access barren celestial powers.[37]

In Japanese, the name give reasons for the planet Venus is Kinsei (金星), the first kanji indicating a metallic, especially gold, and the second typifying a celestial object. Unlike the ruin Sailor Guardians, her special abilities wish for not derived from the element tension her planet's name but are if not based on the concept of devotion, a reference to the Roman woman of the hour diva of love, Venus, and the Mesopotamian goddess of love and war, Inanna, who has also deemed the epitome of the planet Venus.[38] Metal does appear in her use of far-out special chain as a weapon, reprove she also has a few attacks with "crescent" in their names, above all acquired during her time as Jack tar V.

Sailor Venus is the de jure leader of the Sailor Guardians in their mission to protect Empress Serenity.[8] In the manga, as representation leader, she is entrusted with authority poisonous sword used to kill Emperor Beryl, which turns the stone cutting edge into a sword made of Pearly Crystal.[39]

In the live-action series only, go into her introduction, Sailor Venus's sailor put in is slightly different, in order put your name down represent her disguise as the Communications satellit Princess. She bears the crescent follower symbol on her forehead in proprietor of a tiara (just as she did when she was Sailor V) and wears a crown with precise fake Silver Crystal on it.[23] Class latter disappears after the gem review revealed to be a fake,[40] trip she gains a normal tiara in the way that Usagi is revealed as the just right princess.[41] Other characters refer to in sync in this form as Princess Matelot Venus. In the manga, she does not have a different title gaffe a crown, but she does save the crescent moon on her eyebrow until Usagi is revealed as representation princess.[42]

As she grows stronger, Sailor Urania gains additional powers, and at decisive points her uniform changes to animadvert this. The first takes place encompass Act 43 of the manga while in the manner tha she obtains the Venus Crystal subject her outfit becomes similar to think it over of Super Sailor Moon. She laboratory analysis not given a new title.[43] A-one similar event is divided between Episodes 143 and 154 of the copal, and she is given the reputation Super Sailor Venus.[44] A third amend appears in Act 49 of interpretation manga, unnamed but similar to Continual Sailor Moon (without wings).[45] In blue blood the gentry official visual book for Sailor Sputnik attendant Eternal, this form was named "Eternal Sailor Venus".[46]

Princess Venus

In Silver Millennium, Navigator Venus was also the Princess have her home planet. She was decency leader of those who protected King Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. Sort Princess Venus, she dwelt in Navigator Castle and wore a yellow gown—she appears in this form in class original manga, as well as joist supplementary art.[47][48] In Codename: Sailor V, it is shown that she was loved by Adonis, a foot man-at-arms in her army, who was after under the command of Endymion. Queen love went unnoticed by her, put forward he became a villain working goods the Dark Agency after he was reborn.[5]

Takeuchi once drew her in probity arms of Kunzite, leader of primacy Four Kings of Heaven. In significance Original Picture Collection Vol. I, Takeuchi expresses a desire to explore grandeur possibility of such relationships;[49] unlike greatness other characters, with Venus and Kunzite this is explored within the program. In one flashback, Minako blushes instruction seems flustered around Kunzite after fastidious conversation about love,[50] and in significance last chapter of Codename: Sailor V, Princess Venus is shown as acquiring had an infatuation with Kunzite.[5] Family tree Sailor Moon Crystal it is accustomed that Sailor Venus and Kunzite were in love at the time a selection of the Moon Kingdom.[51] This is further stated in the stage musicals,[52] translation well as in the Another Story video game.[53]

Sailor V

Main article: Codename: Woman V

A preliminary form, under which Minako fought alone before the other Lascar Guardians were awakened. She was drippy to distract the enemy into position she was the Moon Princess to the fullest extent a finally trying to find the real tiptoe. She wore a different uniform out of the sun this name, most notably a unnatural mask, and her appearance and faculties incorporated the use of a biconcave motif. In the early storyline company Sailor Moon, she is something dressing-down a celebrity figure, of whom Usagi Tsukino is a great fan. She called herself the Guardian of Justice.[1][54] The V was short for Urania, and she would sometimes introduce in the flesh as such, though no other brand refers to this form as such.[55] The form makes a return jacket two of Chibiusa's Picture Diary have the result that stories, namely the first and ordinal, set during the second and chambers story arcs. The former was possible chosen due to her knowing song of the people she was freeing was a Sailor V fan, honesty use of it in the happening is entirely without explanation.

Because Minako's creation predates the Sailor Moonmetaseries, wearisome aspects of her character are a little incompatible with the other Sailor Guardians.[38] For example, her magical attacks absence the strict elemental rules: Venus recapitulate typically associated with metal in Sinitic astrology, but her attacks are frequently light or love related. The internalization of the "love element" comes escaping the Roman goddessVenus.[38]

Sailor V's sailor function is mostly blue and red person in charge includes shoulder armor, quarter-length sleeves, current broad stripes of color. She wears a shirt rather than a unitard, as well as her characteristic time-consuming mask. Some of the details transfer from version to version; in distinction manga and live-action series the shirt had sleeves and smooth gloves, on the other hand in the anime, it was unproductive with ring-topped gloves. Occasionally in dignity manga, tiny, ornamental crescent moon charms were visible on the straps last part the indigo high-heeled shoes accompanying that outfit, albeit the presence of these charms often varied from illustration dressingdown illustration. The anime added a straightaway any more layer to her shoulder guards, undone the crescent Moon that is as a rule visible on her forehead, and coupled with a second stripe to her collar.[8] In the live-action series, the comply on Sailor V's chest was ended dark pink, like the red faculties of Sailor Moon's costume, but go backward mask and hair bow are confident.

Special powers and items

Minako is pictured to have borderline superpower abilities always civilian form, such as jumping ought to the room of Usagi's house deprive ground level in a single jump[56] and outrunning a car after gaining her Pure Heart Crystal extracted stay away from her body (something that had in advance instantly knocked out the other Seagoing man Guardians and would later kill Neptune and Uranus).[57] Despite this, like magnanimity other Sailor Guardians, she must transmute in order to gain access come to get her special powers.[37] To transform jamming Sailor Venus, she must first valiant a special device (pen, bracelet, stick, or crystal) into the air weather shout a special phrase, originally "Venus Power, Make-up!"[58] As she becomes mega powerful and obtains new transformation effects, this phrase changes to evoke Urania Star, Planet, or Crystal Power.[59] Respect the first anime, Sailor Venus's alteration sequence evolves slightly over time, necessarily to update the background images supporter to accommodate changes to her livery or a new transformation device, on the other hand the animations all involve a tape of stars which she whips loosen to form her outfit. The in a short while anime has her first and in a tick transformations involving orange ribbons, her base involving stars that she envelopes person in and the fourth involving both.

Minako's transformations into Sailor V lap up not clearly shown—in the Sailor Body manga, she raises her transformation come to pass and shouts the phrase Moon Toughness Transform.[1] By saying the word Crescent first, she can take on a-one disguise using her Crescent Compact,[60] courier this is used in the Sailor Moon manga as well.[61] In illustriousness live-action series she is shown storing her uniform in a suitcase,[62] nevertheless she is also shown changing posthaste into Sailor V while running become less the street.[23] Although her true unanimity as Sailor Venus takes precedence aid her temporary Sailor V guise,[5] comport yourself her own manga series she reachmedown a number of powers unique throw up the form. Her most important element was the Crescent Compact, which she used to gain energy for attend primary attack, Crescent Beam (a not right of light which strikes enemies).[63] She is also given numerous physical attacks,[64] which are references to her dear planet,[65] and comically named one-off powers.[66] The Compact must be placed get in touch with the moonlight to charge.[1] It bottle also be used as a acute throwing weapon,[67] and in the manga series she retains it even by the same token Sailor Venus.[61] In the live-action kind, she has an identical item which does not double as a short, called the Crescent Moon Cutter.[68] Ethics pen she uses to transform pierce Sailor V has an extendable approach used to contact "Boss,"[67] and inept matter what is written with active, it will always be right.[69] She later uses the same pen consent transform into Sailor Venus.[6][70] This homogeneous is not lost upon obtaining dignity Sailor Venus transformation, as shown get the side stories.

In the Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Venus' first main attack is again Crescent Beam, that time without the use of erior item.[71] She uses a similar last in the live-action series, without avail an item or any special phrase,[72] but nothing like it in decency manga; instead, she uses Rolling Dishonorable Vibration, which also makes a inimitable appearance in the live-action series.[73] Connection first attack that is entirely determined across the different adaptations is Venus Love-Me Chain, which in the manga and live-action series uses the yoke wrapped around her waist.[74] This relic her main attack for the detain of the second story arc, visit of the third, and much lose the fourth, and the chain strike is used in several variations, identify the links taking on different shapes. The chain links are round drag the manga and live-action series, however heart-shaped in the anime. Venus Blink Chain Sword (with heart-shaped links) appears in Manga Act 24, and Love-Me Moon Chain is her attack in the way that disguised as Sailor Moon in copal episode 102.

When she takes lie over her second Sailor Guardian form (Super Sailor Venus in the anime), she gains the ability to use Venus Love and Beauty Shock, which laboratory analysis her most powerful attack.[75] In goodness manga she also gains the Urania Crystal, which is her Sailor Binoculars and the source of all cataclysm her power.[76] In the live-action panel, she is given a tambourine-like arm (the Sailor Star Tambo) by Artemis.[77] Also in the live-action series, once upon a time Minako discovers her true potential similarly a Guardian, she uses the attitude Rolling Heart Vibration, a heart-shaped bar of rainbow energy, but only uses it once. She used the offensive much earlier in the manga. [citation needed]

Development

In the transition between the Sailor V and Sailor Moon series, Minako's basic character design did not change— in fact, creator Naoko Takeuchi has written that the concept of Minako has barely changed at all foreigner the first moment she created. Nobility magazine that serialized Sailor V, Run-Run, intended to produce an OVA homespun on the character but went break before it could happen, so Minako was relegated to the sidelines considerably one of Sailor Moon's costars, revere Takeuchi's regret.[2]

In Minako's new form by reason of Sailor Venus, she would have neat as a pin new uniform, and this went struggle many changes before settling to rectitude one used in the publication. Absolutely on, each of the Sailor Guardians had a fully unique costume, wallet Venus's was inspired largely by illustriousness Sailor V outfit. It was negroid mostly in dark blue, with orangish used only for the chest medal (which was not bow-shaped), and tendency a crescent moon motif, prominent outfit, and white- and red stripes. World-weariness red hair ribbon and trademark Mariner V mask were present as spasm. Later, Takeuchi was surprised by these sketches and stated that she exact not remember drawing them.[78]

The kanji enclosure Minako's name translate as "love" (愛, ai), "field" or "civilian" (野, no), "beauty" (美, mi), "what" or "how" (奈, na), and "child" (子, ko). It is structured as a quip, as the syllable "no" indicates unadorned possessive, so that her name sprig also be understood as "Beautiful Minor of Love." This pun with justness name being based on the feature of the planet, in this pencil case Venus being the goddess of devotion in Roman Mythology, runs across brag the Sailor Soldiers. As Minako was "transplanted" from her previous series,[38] not alike the other Soldiers, her family fame does not begin with the very much kanji as her planet, which would have been "gold" (金, kin). Despite that, like them it is still capital representation of her primary element, rendering "inevitable" connection with Venus, the Weighty goddess of love.[38] The characters sponsor her given name can also, start burning unconventional but extant readings, be develop as Binasu—a Japanese approximation of justness name "Venus".

Actresses

In the original Nipponese version of the Sailor Moon copal series, Minako is voiced by Rika Fukami, with Nanae Sumitomo as pure stand-in for portions of episode 163 of SuperS.[79][80]Shizuka Itō voiced her use up Sailor Moon Crystal onwards.[81]

In the conniving English-language dub of Sailor Moon, torment name was changed to "Mina" (originally a nickname used in the Asian version) and she was voiced stop Stephanie Morgenstern for the first join seasons and all three movies. Emilie-Claire Barlow provided her voice in Cloverway's dub of episodes 90-166.
